We are three dimensional creatures and our "core" is not just the abdominal muscles although that is what is often focused on as we tend to be weak in our abs. The back muscles also play a role. Latissimus Dorsi! in the lower back and the Trapezius and Rhomboids in the upper back (with many many more) allowing our trunk to be upright, bend forward and backwards, bend laterally and twist.
