Balance is important for posture and fall prevention, which is the number one cause of mortality for those over 65 years of age. Balance is not just standing on one leg like tree pose. In real life balance is walking, running, stooping, climbing stairs, dancing, picking things up, tying your shoes...The Balance Systems is made up of:
1. See: Visual sensory system
2. Hear: Vestibular - Inner ear
3. Feel: Proprioception -awareness of body in space
If you are missing 2 of these things—you can’t balance independently.
FOUR ELEMENTS OF BALANCE:
Peripheral Neural Mechanism: Proprioception knowing where joints are in space
Kinesthia: Conscious awareness of where or joints are in space as we move
Balance the highly integrated dynamic interaction of neurological pathways
Postural Control System: feedback mechanism between the central nervous system and the musculoskeletal system.
To get better at balancing, you have to practice balancing. You have to lose your balance and re-find it over and over again to strengthen the neurological pathways
You'll need a chair, a block, a strap, a space by the wall, or door
