Today was a driving day. Despite getting up early, by the time I walked Maddie and packed up the camper it was 8 o’clock before I hugged Shalini and thanked her again and again for a wonderful visit and I headed out for the Grand Canyon. My plan was to head back east on Hwy 40 but apparently there was a traffic jam and GPS took me back east on 10 past LaQuinta and past Joshua tree before I headed north on Hwy 177. The road was pretty deserted with pointy mountain ranges on each side and a vast desert covered with tumble weed. It was pretty in a desert sorta way. When Hwy 62 joined there was an interesting signpost at Rice Desert along with a totem to deserted shoes and tires and other highway garbage. It was a good opportunity to stop, stretch my legs and take a few pictures.
March 13th Wednesday Irvine California to Hwy 66 Seligman Today was a driving day. At Vidal Junction I turned north on 95 which would take me to Hwy 40 at the border to Arizona. Vidal Junction was literally border patrol station and a gas station where I paid $6.99/gal for gas!!!! Eye Popping but what do you do? There is no other gas station for another 80 miles! The rolling hills, blue sky and pretty clouds made the drive go fast. AT Needles, I was pleasantly surprised that I had joined Hwy 66. Needles is where Hwy 66 starts from the west back to Chicago on the east. Of curse I had to stop to take pictures. The landscape changed frequently but the sky remained a wonderful blue with puffy white clouds. It was too early to stop for the night at Kingsman, another Route 66 historical town, so I drove on and camped at Seligman where their claim to fame is again Route 66 but the town is pretty sad with dilapidated abandoned clapboard houses and the few that were occupied were in bad need of care and repair. There were a few cafes, a gas station, a general store and a closed RV park. Luckily there was a KOA a mile out of town so I stayed there. The memorable cafe was “Roadkill Cafe”.
