Someone in the class requests knees almost every time I ask for requests. So here it is again.
The knee is a complex joint (double joint) with 4 large muscle groups supporting an architecturally unstable structure which supports the full weight of the body from above. The Hamstrings, Quads, Adductors and Abductors all work together to bring flexibility as well as stability to the joint. Salient points? Allow your knee to track over the center of your toes, resists twisting the knee away from your toes--it will take the brunt of your movement. Your knee will be the most stable if you stack it above your ankle when static--but it needs to be able to go over your toes when climbing stairs. Foster equal strength on all 4 sides of your knee joint--it's not all about the quads! You need the hamstrings and adductors/abductors too! Strong glutes are also important. Awareness is the first medicine in Ayurveda. Cultivate awareness, gain knowledge, practice safe movement in your yoga poses, develop strength in the supporting muscle groups, practice for muscle memory.
