I guess we are not done with the hips quite yet--there's a lot to cover! I often get the request for "Hip Openers" for 'stiff hips'. There are 3 main causes for 'stiff hips' and stretching is not always the best answer. Your hips can be stiff or uncomfortable because of underuse (ex. sitting too much), overuse (strenous hike), or imbalanced use (carrying a baby on one hip).
Your hips muscles manage complex relationships between your spine, pelvis and legs for which we need to develop stability and symmetry. Our habitual patterns often lead to imbalances (stepping one foot into and out of the car causing torque in our hip structures). We need to identify these patterns and try to rectify them. Our hips are weight-bearing joints and therefore need to be strong and stable more than they need to be flexible. We have 6 possible movements in our hips: flexion/extension; abduction/adduction; external/internal rotation.
