"The Mountains are Calling and I must go" John Muir. I grew up in the Himilayan Mountains and came back to the US for college in Iowa. Although I grew to love the rolling hills of Iowa I have made the pilgrimage to the Rocky Mountains every year for 46 years to renew my soul. Mountains have such majesty. This time I find that "sitting like a mountain" in meditation is more important to me than usual as I am unable to practice "asana" or yoga poses as my "broken back" heals. Seated Meditation is also practicing Yoga. More and more research is showing the importance of a meditation practice. It can be quite simple. Sit Like a Mountain. Find a comfortable seated position and find your relationship to gravity by bringing your awareness to how your body connects to the earth. Then Relax--start with your jaw and mouth and tongue then do your own personal body scan and relax. Now Breathe--follow each exhale out to the very end; your body will know when it is time to inhale. Your mind will wonder. That is OK.Just wake up and notice--then come back to your exhaling breath. Sit Like a Mountain. Let the weather and thoughts swirl around you without changing you. Just Sit Like a Mountain.
